Our Grated Coconut (thenga chirakiyathu) comes in a 200 g pack, roughly what you get from one coconut, so you can skip the breaking and scraping. Grated coconut is the backbone of the Kerala kitchen: toss it into thoran and mezhukkupuratti, grind it with shallots and chilli for chammanthi, roast it for theeyal, layer it in puttu, or squeeze it for fresh coconut milk for stew and payasam.

Fresh coconut spoils quickly, so refrigerate it in a closed container as soon as it arrives and use it within a day, or freeze it in small portions.
